Our approach
We find this research fascinating, and we think it deserves a fair hearing. So we lead with what looks promising, and we set a balancing study beside it, because the whole picture is more useful (and more trustworthy) than a one-sided one.
Method
We looked for human trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, animal-study reviews and regulatory guidance on air ions. Each is rated by the strength of evidence for a health claim:
- Encouraging Controlled evidence pointing the right way, but limited or not yet independently replicated.
- Early Small, preliminary or laboratory-based: interesting, not yet established.
- Not shown Studied, and no benefit was found.
- Safety note A potential harm to be aware of.
- Background Context or regulatory guidance rather than a test of a health claim.
- Listed Included for completeness; a summary of the results will follow.
Limits
- This is not a systematic review. It is a plain-language summary of the most relevant sources we found.
- The list was compiled from search-engine summaries; citation details and links need to be checked against the originals. Entries flagged “details to confirm” are known gaps.
- Ion counts come from different instruments and methods, and are indicative only.
- Evidence changes. Last compiled: October 2026.
Disclosure
The operator of this site also sells Nefful socks at socks.negativeionwellness.com. Nefful describes the fibre in those socks as generating negative static electricity and ions. We include that product in the same evidence framework as everything else — and have said where the evidence for ion claims about clothing is missing.
